Free Downloadable Treasures

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

So my new favorite obsession is free downloadable art & projects that can spread a little bit o' sunshine. First, I found these lovely Tree of All Seasons tags from Fog & Thistle whose blog is a definite must-read. Also their Etsy shop has amazing paper cut prints that I'm putting on my "As soon as we get our own home list." I already have many uses lined up for these little tree tags- starting tomorrow I'm attaching one to a friend's birthday present & I can hardly wait to use the others for housewarming gifts.

Also, I am in love with this cleverly sweet (or sassy) "say it like it is" card from Creature Comforts. It prints out so nicely & the little space lets you add in your own adjective (or use the helpful included list) to customize a card for just about anyone. I made one already for my little sister's birthday this upcoming weekend. Plus she has nifty hand drawn gift tags/ address labels with two bitty birds. I'm already thinking of other ways to use these- the possibilities are endless!

Other downloadable treasures:

So many lovelies at Print a Day- labels, calendars, notepads
Jessica Jones' Oh-so-Orange Wallapapers: Dots & Pods
Desktop Calendar from Vintage Glam
Itty Bitty Birdy Wedding Invitation by Unless Someone Like You
Modern Gift Wrap paper from giftwrapit.com - handy!

Hey, Lucky Lady!

Monday, October 27, 2008

Look what was waiting for us on our doorstep last week....this snuggly, softy, oh-so-lovable owl from StelaBird. How happy was I to learn we won her blog giveaway?! Little Jack loved this owlie at first sight...in fact Mr. Owl is so covered in drool right now he made need a trip to the washer already. I definitely must've gotten the best prize given away anywhere all week, but Estela is super sweet to boot. I'm definitely keeping her shop on my list as we plan for the holidays.
Thanks Estela!

Countdown to Halloween

Thursday, October 23, 2008

Yesterday, Jack tried on his Halloween costume...I just couldn't pass up this sweet little glow-in-the-dark skeleton outfit! Looks like he's ready for trick or treating & the countdown is on...

Tall Order Baby

Oh sense of accomplishment. I love to see my creations ironed, folded, tied, wrapped, & shipped off to their new home. Here is part of a baby blanket order I created for The Fig Tree in Chicago. Each blanket had it's own personality...I had fun trying to imagine the little baby who would eventually be bundled up in all the plushness!

One Small Miracle

Thursday, October 16, 2008

This post has been weighing on my mind for awhile, I struggled with whether putting it all out there has a purpose- but during this last week with tears not far & the date looming over, I have felt compelled to share...to share with myself mostly- to record how miraculous life is, because over time, sometimes even the most brilliant of moments can fade.

But I'd like to keep this one in a treasured little time capsule.

A year ago October 16th, while pregnant with Jack, we were given some pretty shocking news. For me, surprises usually come in two types- the kind where you think you must be dreaming or those that just come right on out & slap you in the face. This wasn't a slap, it was a punch.

During an ultrasound we were told our baby had a brain defect.

I knew something was wrong when the cheery technician switched the machine from the regular black & white grainy photos to the state of the art three dimensional mode, allowing us to see our baby's features & expressions. The tech had made a comment about these pictures allowing parents to "bond" with their babies in utero. Maybe it was the special education teacher in me, but I knew that phrase eluded to something more. Eventually, after much admiration of our baby's full lips, peacefully shut eyes, and squished up little body, he said the words all parents must fear during these appointments, "the doctor would like to speak with you in his office."

So as it all goes we were shown on the screen where there was indeed, a black void, where baby's brain had not developed. A specific area of the brain that qualifies for an official name, a diagnosis; Dandy-Walker syndrome. An ironically horrible name I immediately thought. Cruel almost. Of course, we were told that as with many deformities the resulting effects can appear along a spectrum. Suddenly, I felt catapulted from my somewhat comfortable position as a special educator to that of a parent of a child with special needs. My mind reeled & I thought, "this is why God led me in the path He did- to prepare me for this child."

Naturally, tears & shock & insomnia & love & prayers & anger & extreme attachment all came that morning and stayed for awhile. I'm proud of my husband & I for our response, it brought us closer together as a couple & gave me a warm sense of peace that perhaps I couldn't have known about our marriage unless this occurred. It was as if at that moment we really became parents.

I looked back into my pregnancy diary from that day & the weeks that followed & one thing I noticed in the letters to my baby was that a transformation took place within me. It was as though my past & my previous mistakes were erased, like my life really began- as though being a teacher, a daughter, a wife, a friend were just a prelude to what I really was meant to be- a mother to this child. At no time in my life have I felt such extreme attachment to another living being- I knew without a doubt that life had a new meaning- or more accurately- it finally had a meaning. And I knew that this baby would not face any challenge alone.

For reasons I will never know, our story takes a turn. Jack does not have a brain defect. Jack is a perfectly healthy, rambunctious, active, engaging, & loving 9 month-old who holds a powerful story. No one can really explain what happened; some folks write off the doctors & the tests- but I cannot erase the image of that black space on the screen, I know it was there. That along with other indicators all pointing to a congenital impairment or deformity have confirmed in me that something more amazing took place.

As a special education teacher I probably see 'disorders' and 'disabilities' and 'impairments' slightly differently than most folks.... some of the most joyous moments in my life have been in the presence of my students.

To me, the miraculous bit is not necessarily that Jack was born without a brain defect, it is the mother I became thinking he did.

Here are some photos that tell the story: the ultrasound, at the hospital, Jack at 9 months taking in the world around him, and he & I on October 16th.

Baby Bib Inspiration

Monday, October 13, 2008

You Can Pick 'Em

Sunday, October 12, 2008

Oh my precious Jack. He brings such color & happiness to my life. When I was pregnant I slowly put Quiltish off to the side, thinking I'd only have time or energy or desire to hem pants, attach buttons, and construct the yearly halloween costume. I had no idea that experiencing the world with Jack would make me see colors & designs in a whole new way. Somehow now I am even more inspired, I have more ideas & concepts swirling about than I ever did before... and the strange thing is- is that it's all more exciting- without all the pressure of the classroom & the standards I placed on myself before.

It's like Jack has this completely unbridled thirst for life & everything new. Though he tends to get bored of any one toy or place or book or...even some people...he absolutely loves being outdoors & seems to just absorb it all. I love how he can find the tiniest little detail, the smallest speck & become so enamored with it. I know there is a huge metaphor there- something I undoubtedly need to learn from.

Just this weekend, we were lucky enough to have bright & sunny autumn days here in Oregon and to make the most of it we went to the river to feed the ducks and then out to the pumpkin patch the next day. Watching his eyes dance at the mere sight of the ducks or pluck away contentedly at a dirty pumpkin......it's all put in perspective.

Little Bird - Creating Lovely Gift Sets with Flying Bird Botanicals

Friday, October 10, 2008

A little while back I hatched this idea to pair up with a bath & body shop to show what fantastic gift sets can be made with quiltish washies, toiletry bags, & baby basics. I searched & searched & finally found an amazing shop, Flying Bird Botanicals, that features vegetarian & organic products. Their bath & body collection is so luscious & tempting, but what really caught my eye is the Baby Bird Gift Basket- which is just about the cutest, healthiest set out there. Plus, to top it all off, their packaging is all around lovely.

Through much correspondence we've been able to highlight our items together- showcasing how some truly lovely gifts can be created when
pairing quiltish bags & baby items with FlyingBirds Botanicals.

Love You 1,000 Ways

Wednesday, October 08, 2008

Oh, let me count the ways....

So yesterday I opened a shop with my handbags & baby items on the new site, 1,000 Markets and am thrilled with the set-up, lay-out and technical features. They scouted me out & I feel honored to be one of the founding shops, excited to see where it all leads. Here's a short list of some very cool aspects of the site I've encountered in the last day (I'm sure there's more I've yet to discover!)

  • Uploads product photos in batches, well doesn't this just save a ton of time?!
  • A separate little blog piece for artists to update their happenings & journey, I always love reading those tidbits about different sellers!
  • Products displayed in 'gallery' type setting & it looks oh-so-professional
  • When viewing an item little bitty photos of the seller's other items are arranged tactfully on the side (which is super helpful for folks like me who create a range of goods...bags to bibs)
  • Videos can be uploaded...wow, hmmm, this could be neat...
  • Option to create "collections"- fantastic for fall vs. spring handbags
  • Shop dashboard section has a handy little automated "to-do" list, now I can write on my other to-do list to check this to-do list...
  • A feature that is still in the works & I'm still grasping is the whole 'marketplace' concept. Here's a quote from there site:
    "Our markets are more than just collections of products;
they are full of people and stories. They have voices and
    personalities.
Our markets are large and small, broad and narrow. Some
have themes, like food, crafts, or art. Others cultivate a
sense of place around a region. And some exist simply
because the people in them share friendship or common
values. Each market fosters its own one-of-a-kind
    community, always unique and interesting."

Halloween Costumes for Babies

Wednesday, October 01, 2008

Lambs, pea pods, sock monkeys, goblins, lions, tigers, and bumble bees... Oh, how it's difficult to choose a Halloween costume for baby. Especially the very first one. Here's some tutorials for those who'd like to create & some great shops for those who need a little handmade kick start....

Tutorials:
A diversion from the traditional at Cookie Magazine -featuring a cat burglar, cotton candy, and a conductor plus a great cheat sheet for last minute expensive get-ups.

Of course I'd find something from Martha- clever & cute- Goldfish, Lambs, & a Chicken... virtually no-sew & very clear tutorial. She's also got some sweet harvest vegetables for the older bunch. Ah Martha.

Hit the jackpot with Parenting Magazine's collection of 100 costumes and a dozen no-sews for babes. If we were back in Boston, I'd have to go for the lobster they've got featured!

Handmade Goodies:
I found a virtual treasure trove of adorable Halloween hats on Etsy that could make a super simple costume or be worn through the autumn months. I really couldn't believe what cuteness I found!

Babaii Alainn ("beautiful baby" in Gaelic, pronounced "bah-bee aw-lin) has some very sweet knit caps for baby & toddler. I love the little lion hat & aviator beanie.

There are tons of unique choices at Funny Finn like giraffes, monkeys, & foxes but my favorite is the Little Bug Helmet! These hats would also be great for year round imaginative play.

Sweet little fleece caps that can be worn all through winter can be found at TieDyeDiva. I especially love the bunny (great photo) and little bear.

I was so excited to see that ConcreteKnits is located in the same town, Portland, Oregon. What a lovely shop this is, if only little Jack would keep a hat on I would scoop up this pumpkin beanie.
