Hello Spring - New Collection

Monday, February 28, 2011

Excited to share these new lovelies....my ode to spring! For this collection I focused a bit on prints different from what I'm used to, splashes of new color (mustard, anyone?), and a variety of flowers beyond my tried & true felt poppies.  Here's to longer days, new beginnings, blooming trees, and bits of sunshine!

{adding all these bags & clutches to my shop this week....with new organizers coming soon}

Itching for spring too or sad to leave cozy winter behind?

Weekend This and That

Saturday, February 26, 2011

Hello, Happy Saturday!

fabric I've scooped up this month

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend so far. It's been cold & chilly here...making it perfect for sewing & crafting! Earlier this week I posted about quick tips for an Etsy shop makeover...a bit of spring cleaning...and I've felt the same way in my studio. Excited for warmer weather and new fabrics, prints, and designs.

Run Baby Run - Reframing Thoughts for Happiness

Friday, February 25, 2011

The other day the sun made a brief appearance in our neck of the woods. I scooped up Jack up, laced our shoes, and tossed the soccer ball into the car. Off we went to enjoy possibly one of his most favorite activities in the world, "do sports."

Not long into our 'soccer practice' (his words, not mine ;) - he darted off, daringly close to the rough & tumble high-schoolers the next field over. Thoughts of him being tripped over, bee lining it right down their field, or him being smacked with a corner kick left me in a panic. I called after him and you know what he did? He just kept running.

He's three, he's testing limits. I get it. But this little stunt had 6  month pregnant me chasing after a quick little preschooler.... frustrated & ready to call our soccer outing quits.
{taken last year, another sunny day in February}

And then, it hit me.

He's running.

There was a moment in our life when we worried whether our baby would even be able to walk properly. During my pregnancy we were given a false diagnosis of brain malformation that could affect his gross motor skills, and possibly much more.

So I stopped chasing him (I'm sure everyone was disappointed to see that spectacle end!)

Instead of feeling like, "oh my goodness this is so exhausting and his skinny little behind should be following directions"  I thought to myself "oh my goodness, we're so blessed he's running....and he needs to get his skinny little bum back over here."   It was a little mental shift. Reframed my thoughts....and it completely changed how I felt.

It took a breath (or a few). And he came back. And we played soccer. And he ran & ran.

{I've been trying to apply this same little mental shift to daily activities - washing dishes, answering emails, silly pregnancy exercise videos- and it's made a world of difference in my level of stress & my personal degree of happiness....}

5 Quick Tips to Makeover Your Etsy Shop

Thursday, February 24, 2011

{image courtesy Apartment Therapy}

I admit it. I'm obsessed with makeovers. Of any kind really. People losing weight, cutting off inches of their hair....but mostly room transformations. I just love a good shock. And it always feels nice- like, 'well hey now, there is hope.'  With spring around the corner, I bet some of our shops need a little dusting off and smartening up. Short of an official re-launch, here are a few things to spruce things up a bit!

1. Photo Refresh:  You know you have at least a couple that could be better. Maybe try something different; introduce staging or props, new location or background, vary the angle?  {ps. here's a few of my own photography tips}

2. Focus on Color: Open up that box of Crayola's and reconsider how you've described your items.  Is it yellow or maybe ochre?  Green or endive?  Blue or  Ocean?  {tip: I love Martha Stewart's Paint names, do keep in mind current Etsy merchandising pointers as well }

3. Pizzazz:  Not talking multiple pieces of flair or anything, but maybe just a little sumthin' sumthin'.  A new technique? A color you've never worked with? A spin on one of your current items?

4. Updated Profile: Maybe it's just me, but I wrote that thing ages ago & hadn't really given it a second look. I was horrified & embarrassed to rediscover mine- a virtual babbling mess.  Rewrite yours to establish your brand, tell your story, and differentiate your shop.

5. Usher in the New: If you've got the time add hints of the upcoming season to your shop with a few new items.  Too busy to add to the collection? Perhaps just rearrange your shop items to keep things fresh.

There we go- a quick & easy dusting off! Have a quick tip of your own? Do share!

For me this Pillow Tutorial was love at first sight...it's a dazzling mixture of painting, drawing, color mixing, and quilting! I totally want to make one of my own...maybe even with Jack's help- what an awesome way to keep his artwork.

The tutorial is from the amazing Alisa Burke, pure inspiration herself.  Be sure to take a peek at all the photos, it's a beauty!

Finding Inspiration - Climbing Over Creative Blocks

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

There I was happily writing along, working on my little e-book, and then 50 pages or so later......screech! A dead stop. Just like that. Total block. Not like I ran out of ideas, but I had too many.  I was stuck between this or that.  Up or down. Front or back.  Stuck in my own indecision and whirlwind of thoughts.

{The Art of Writing print from Emily Ann Designs

That was two weeks ago.

I find the same thing happens when I create new things...I get gobs of ideas; many are written down, many are sadly forgotten, and eeks! many more are lost to total paralysis.  How in the world does this happen? And better still, how in the heck can I get out of it?

I'd really love to hear how you handle these situations.....here's five things I do to get out of a creative mess:

1. Walk.  Away.  I simply put things down and come back to it later. Sometimes for an hour. Sometimes a month. It usually works out.

2. Sleep. Things have a way of figuring themselves out this way.

3. Look.  At fabric, mostly. Though I must admit, this can often make things worse....creating even more ideas. But staring at a pretty little bundle often does the trick.

4. Go.  Sometimes if I just start cutting the fabric or going to my writing place good things happen.  (sometimes they don't ;)

5.  Listen.  To great music. To my friends. To other crafters & indie business owners. Sometimes to my husband (wink, wink).  It's easy to miss all the words of advice, encouragement & inspiration. But, when I really stop to listen I can usually find a sense of calm &  renewal.

do share how you work yourself out of a creative conundrum!

Tutorial Tuesday- Personalized Drawstring Bag

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Hooray! A new tutorial to share. I actually made these little drawstring bags over a month ago for party favors at my son's third birthday, but they ended up being such a hit I thought I'd pass them along. This one is super easy & uses simple techniques. The size can be adjusted for your purpose...and there are so many ways to use these bags- I can see them filled with bath & body products for girlfriends, sweets on Easter, hostess gifts, mini ones as tooth fairy pockets.....

Let me first say I wish the photos turned out better, but this is what we get in foresty, gray Oregon in January....next house will have tons of natural light. Anyhow, hope it's clear & please let me know if you have any questions (or, gasp! find any errors!)

Materials:
One piece of fabric 10" x 26"  (I used muslin but look forward to some bright ones next time)
String/Cord/Twill Tape: two pieces 25" each (though I made do with one piece)
Fabric Marking Pen
Pinking shears
Thread (I like a contrasting color)
Fabric Paint & Stamps (optional- to personalize)

Step 1:  Fold over 1/4" of fabric at each long end. (right side up, fold toward wrong side).  Press.

Step 2: Fold fabric in half, right sides together with pressed top edges aligned at top. This creates the "bag". On wrong side of fabric, mark 2" down from folded edge and 1/2" in from sides.

Step 3: With a 1/2" seam allowance, sew from bottom of folded bag *stopping* at the little mark you made. Backstitch. Do this on both sides.

Step 4: With pinking shears trim the seam allowance you just created. This prevents the bag from fraying.

Step 5:  This is just a little tricky. But you can do it. At the top of the bag fold back the seam about 1/4" inch starting at that same little dot you made. This is kind of a diagonal fold. Press down. Do this for both sides.

It should look a bit like this.

 Step 6: Now to make the little "tunnels" for your cord. This is what makes it a drawstring bag. Be sure that whatever cording/string material you are using fits inside these tunnels. With your bag still wrong side facing out, fold over top again, meeting up (generally) with that little dot.  Press well- it will make your sewing easier.

Step 7: Sew the tunnels. You will be sewing from the wrong side, so your bobbin thread will actually be the one to show once turned out. I think the contrast is cute. Sew close to the pressed edge, being careful not to catch the flap of the other side. Be sure to backstitch at the ends well to ensure your tunnels are secure.

Should look a wee bit like this. Sewn on both flap. Trim threads.

Step 8: Turn bag right side out. Press.

{now is the time to personalize if you'd like - follow directions on fabric paint. I used air drying washable fabric paint. Some require heat settings. I wanted these simple but hope to experiment a bit more}

Step 9:  Thread the cord. There are many tools out there that would've been helpful. A crochet hook maybe? Well, I was pressed for time & just made this wonky little hook with an unfolded paper clip. It worked! Run string through one side of tunnel, making sure to keep the other end out. Keep working the string around to the second tunnel, bringing it back out so the two ends meet.  Repeat for two strings, starting at the other side. Knot ends.

{note: I only used one string...partly because I initially measured incorrectly! I also wanted the string to be a little shorter, so as not to be a choking hazard for wee ones...}

Step 10: Fill with goodies!
I included a cute little coloring book from Kitty Baby Love and a box of crayons.

Happy sewing!

When I Grow Up

Friday, February 11, 2011

{Print from Jenzet}

The question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” always made me cringe. Somehow, it always seemed so limiting. Like there’s just one answer- a multiple choice test with only one box to fill in.  In high school, I had high hopes for that questionnaire they hand out-  identifying strengths and possible career matches. Instead, I was horrified to see my counselor had marked my golden ticket as “hotel hospitality”. Luckily, I dug a little deeper and realized that since I’d actually only been to a couple hotels in my whole life and I much preferred academics, teaching was a better route for me.

And so, I became one. I remember my first month into teaching special education, after graduating college and moving on to a great big city, I thought to myself, “is this it?”  Although I desperately loved teaching & it filled a certain void...I still wondered, “what now that I’ve checked the box?”

Jumping forward a half decade and now a mother to a three year-old, the idea of what to be when grown up burdens me even more. Just the other day someone asked my son that very question.  No doubt they were attempting the somewhat difficult task of small talk with a preschooler but my son looked at me with serious concern and confusion.  He said  “just pick one thing?”  After mulling it over for a second he replied, “a construction-worker fireman space guy with a motorcycle.”

I smiled gleefully and thought, “hooray!”

That’s it. The wisdom of a 3 year-old addressed my personal conflict; Am I still a teacher now that I stay home with him? Have I erased that box and checked a new one, a stay at home mum? Or how about crafter? Or more officially, small business owner? Since I have a bum knee can I still call myself a runner?  At this moment and five months pregnant, do my dorky exercise videos qualify me as an athlete?

Yes. To “all of the above.”

In my son, dressed in his cowboy hat and chaps sitting in the laundry basket turned rocket ship, I can clearly appreciate my journey- and the various titles and labels and characteristics it brings.

Because I’m checking my own boxes...as many as I want.

Robot Valentine

Tuesday, February 08, 2011

Hooray! We completed Jack's valentines for his friends & school mates. We're both so happy with how they turned out. Of course, they are totally his style- orange with robots.  Last year we made those cute little melty hearts, but now that he is able to write a bit and enjoys (some) crafting...I thought of this one!

It was easy as pie, I free hand drew a robot (as if you can't tell ;) on white paper then he wrote his name in the middle. I scanned this image into the computer & printed on aqua cardstock. We cut them into card size rectangles and then Jack added bits of flair;  red heart cutouts & orangy eyes (using a regular 'ol hole punch). Glued on a more orange card stock and there we were surrounded by dozens of darling little robots.

This craft was perfect for him since he loves helping to use the computer, writing his name, and gluing little bits. It didn't require as much patience as some of the other projects I set up for him :)

I've also found tons of charming printable valentines & will be sharing those soon!

::Love to hear & see any Valentinesy crafts you've been creating::
